What CamScanner did well — and where it lost people
CamScanner deserves credit for effectively inventing the consumer document-scanner-on-a-phone category around 2011. The original app was fast, produced great scans, and did OCR when most competitors were still charging per page. It became so synonymous with the category that "camscanner" is often searched as a generic term for "scan a document."
What went wrong wasn't one thing — it was a slow drift. The 2019 malware incident (Kaspersky discovered a malicious module in the Android version's ad SDK; Google pulled the app for a few weeks) was a serious trust hit. The free tier got progressively worse: watermarks on every page, limits on export quality, ads inside the scan flow, mandatory signup, and paywalls around OCR, editing and cloud sync. The core scanner is still good, but a lot of people just want to scan a document without all that overhead.
Who should stay on CamScanner Premium
A fair recommendation: CamScanner Premium is worth keeping if you specifically need any of these:
- Cloud sync across phone and desktop — CamScanner's cloud lets you scan on your phone and access the PDFs on a Windows desktop app. This site doesn't have cloud sync on purpose (it's a browser tool). If you need cross-device sync, CamScanner Premium covers that.
- OCR in unusual languages — the paid API they use handles ~60 languages including some low-resource ones. Our free OCR (Tesseract) handles about 30 well and is competitive on English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Chinese but weaker on scripts like Bengali, Amharic or Tamil.
- Batch collaboration — sharing folders of scans with a team, comments on scans, etc. This site is a solo tool.

- Anyone hitting the CamScanner Free watermark — you can get watermark-free scans here immediately, no signup, no upgrade.
- Anyone bothered by the 2019 privacy incident — a browser tool has no persistent access to your device beyond a one-time camera permission per session.
- Anyone who scans occasionally — installing an app for something you do once a month is disproportionate. A bookmark is enough.

The privacy honest-take
CamScanner uploads your scans to their cloud by default. That might be a feature (cross-device access) or a problem (confidential documents on a third party's server). This site removes the question by having no cloud at all — everything happens in your browser. Verify with DevTools → Network tab while scanning: you will see zero image or PDF uploads leave your device.
What about other CamScanner alternatives?
